Who are you? What do you want? And why?
How much of sexual identity is biology, how much of it is environment? Molecular biologist Grace Dugdale presents her findings from the edges of scientific research in her session: the mating game, exploring the science of sex. Grace’s work has examined sexual identity in detail, particularly the different factors that determine the way we act. She will be suggesting that our choices may not be choices, and looking at the dramatic consequences of this new understanding of the sexual rivalry which underpins our lives.
Never before have the photographs we take been so important, as most of us dabble with a digital identity. But how much better would that identity be if we were more in control of our photographs? London Art Director and acclaimed photographer Christian Banfield is passionate about people taking better photos. In his specially designed interactive session, he will explain the secrets behind good shots, and show you how to adapt them to the ones you take with your phone - making you master of your social media with your well-crafted photographs.
Writer, TED alumni and linguist expert Tom Chatfield is an expert in identity of words, the subject of his latest book Netmyology. Especially for Salon North, Tom will be conducting a linguistic slam explaining the words we have created to cope with the digital age. From apps to avatars, hashtags to hacktivism many new words are being mined to explain our increasingly wired lives, but where did the words come from?, and why did we agree on those exact ones? Tom will explain their exact origin, and also explain how technology is causing language itself to change, and is in turn altering our own identities.
Come explore your own, your latest and your digital identity with Salon North on the 4th October.
