Scents and Misdemeanors

Think murders can’t be solved by smell?  Take another read of your favourite detectives, and we’re looking at you Raymond Chandler, Agatha Christie and Sherlock Holmes.  Olfactory expert and scent obsessive Odette Toilette presents us with ‘Scents and Misdemeanors’, a session designed in honour of the Crime Festival 2012.  Odette will take us on a fragrant safari outside our Speigeltent setting, throughout literature’s great detectives to bring key scenes and key characters to life by smell alone.  There will be moments when you are transported to another moment in time by fragrance, we’re betting on at least one Swedish lakeside summerhouse at night, and Odette assures us there will be prizes, for which we are very grateful to Escentual.

Virtual Autopsy :

Do you have a passion for pathology in your detective fiction? Then this session is for you, please get yourself a stiff drink, and settle yourself down at the front and watch as Dr Suzy Lishman, Vice-President of the Royal College of Pathologists showcases her virtual autopsy for Salon North.  Suzy is passionate about bringing pathology to the people and so has created her traveling autopsy to show exactly what happens in the real lab, on a real slab.  Working with a real body, with her box of medical equipment for every eventuality by her side, she’ll talk us through exactly how an autopsy works including, how to prise open the ribcage, how to spot a drinker from the inside and what, once you’ve sawn off the top of the skull, the brain really feels like to the touch.

Mind Reading 101 :

And finally, internationally acclaimed mind reader Philip Escoffey will be on hand to explain the thinking behind the tricks of the mind-reading trade.  Psychologist, entertainer or perhaps even conman, Philip is fascinated by the psychology of belief & need and for Salon North, this skilful mentalist will be taking a broad sweep at charlatans and exposing the techniques they’ve mastered in order to make us believe they have special powers. Philip will be using plenty of examples so keep your hands on your wallet and your wits about you as you allow Philip to give you the most bedazzling half hour of your life.  Or at least make you think you have.
