His latest piece of research The Art of Statistics draws on real-world problems to introduce conceptual issues - and he'll be showing us how statistics can help us look anew at data: from determining the luckiest passenger on the Titanic to explaining how notorious serial killers could have been caught earlier, via the complexity of data from medical screening - you'll never think about data in the same way again.
Statistics has played a leading role in our scientific understanding of the world for centuries, yet we are all familiar with the way statistical claims can be sensationalised, particularly in the media. In the age of big data, as data science becomes established as a discipline, a basic grasp of statistical literacy is more important than ever.
Sir David Spiegelhalter is a leading British statistician, he's the Winton Professor of the Public Understanding of Risk at the University of Cambridge and his highly entertaining talk will be followed by a Q&A hosted by Salon London's Helen Bagnall.
