14th June 2020 | Live Stream

Book Club LIVE is Salon Lockdown's venture to invite us all to a Book Club with the author. So please join us on Sunday 14 June for a Book Club LIVEstream with the prize-winning, much-acclaimed journalist and feminist campaigner, Helen Lewis and her extraordinary debut: Difficult Women – the imperfect and unfinished story of the battles for women’s rights.

Well-behaved women don’t make history: difficult women do. Hear from Helen as she explains why feminism’s success is down to complicated, contradictory, imperfect women, who fought each other as well as fighting for equal rights. Too many of these pioneers have been whitewashed or forgotten in our modern search for feel-good, inspirational heroines. It’s time to reclaim the history of feminism as a history of difficult women.

You’ll meet the working-class suffragettes who advocated bombings and arson; the princess who discovered why so many women were having bad sex; the pioneer of the refuge movement who became a men’s rights activist; the ‘striker in a sari’ who terrified Margaret Thatcher; the wronged Victorian wife who definitely wasn’t sleeping with the prime minister; and the lesbian politician who outraged the country.

Drawing on archival research and interviews, Helen will present the funny, fearless and sometimes shocking narrative history, which shows why the feminist movement has succeeded – and what it should do next. The battle is difficult, and we must be difficult too.

"I always love her writing – an enviable mix of effortlessly erudite and funny – and this book addresses one of the great unacknowledged blocks to female liberation: the tyranny of niceness. No one ever changed the world by being nice." - Caroline Criado-Perez

Helen will be in-conversation with Salon London’s Helen Bagnall before we put your questions to her - LIVE.

Numbers will be limited. Access is £7 or free if you buy the bookDifficult Women, from us which we will send you. Alternatively, become a member and get unlimited access to all Salon events, live and online, across the year.
