The Boy in the Book

Nathan Penlington has gained a reputation as an original and inventive performer across the UK by seamlessly fusing storytelling and comedy with writing that is intelligent, accessible and entertaining. He has performed at venues and festivals across the UK, Europe and the USA and has been billed alongside John Cooper Clarke, Ricky Gervais, Daniel Kitson, and Stewart Lee.

His work has been broadcast on BBC Radio 1, Radio 3, Radio 4, 6 Music, London Live, Diesel:U:Music, and he was co-host of three series of the surreal spoken word show Parlour Games on Resonance 104.4FM with Guy J Jackson.

Nathan’s latest project Choose Your Own Documentary is a collaboration with three filmmakers: Fernando Gutierrez De Jesus, Nick Watson, and Sam Smaïl. Combining film, stand-up, and storytelling, the show allows the audience to interact with the performance by using wireless remote controls to decide what happens next. With over 1500 permutations each performance is unique. The show has been co-commissioned by the Southbank Centre, and supported by Arts Council England.

Nathan performed a five night run at the Southbank Centre in London in 2012 and took the show to SXSW in Austin Texas in March 2013. This was followed by a run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival where the show won the prestigious Scotsman Fringe First Award for ‘outstanding writing and innovation’. Choose Your Own Documentary will be touring the UK in 2014, started with a two week run at the Soho Theatre, London.

The Boy In The Book, the complete story of finding the diary, will be published by Headline on 22nd May 2014 .
