Back to Basics

Salon North promises big and delivers bigger, as on the 22nd November we have New Scientist Cosmology consultant Marcus Chown to explain the quantum world in ten easy steps.  This award winning writer, broadcaster and astrophysicist developed this session especially for Salon to help us get to grips with the secrets of life, the universe and everything.  After hearing him speak, we guarantee you will understand the forces of physics that govern our world from parallel universes to understanding how to travel through time.

Everyone has a voice, but it’s what you do with it that counts, and especially for Salon North’s Back to Basics we have one of the country’s best vocal coaches to reintroduce you to yours.  Fresh from BBC’s The Voice Juliet Russell has worked with Paloma Faith, M.I.A, Damon Alban and this year sang at the official closing of Yoko Ono’s Meltdown Festival at the Royal Festival Hall.  Whether you need better projection, to have more gravitas in your tone, or want to put your vocal chords to the test, after this specially developed art of the voice session you’ll never think of your voice in the same way again.

Psychopaths may be intraspecies predators, but as Oxford Professor Kevin Dutton has established, as long as you set a few ground rules, they’re not all bad, in fact there’s a lot you can learn from them.  They’re great communicators, highly influential, and full of (superficial) charm.  As a world expert in social influence, Kevin Dutton shows us how we can learn from their unique approach to make ourselves more healthy, wealthy and wise, in ‘The Wisdom of Psychopaths' for Salon North.
