Salon North - INNOVATE

INNOVATE is the first Salon in our Innovate, Create and Motivate Salon North Series. Jamie Bartlett, Director of the Centre for the Analysis of Social Media at the think-tank Demos, will be on the Salon North stage to help us understand how we can learn from the groups lurking in the shadowy areas of the internet.  Jamie’s work shows there’s a lot of innovation on ‘The Dark Net’, if you’re brave enough to enter.

Renowned cultural historian John Higgs believes we were extremely comfortable with innovation up until the end of the 19th Century, but once the 20th Century hit, with its chaos maths, relativity and cubism, we shrank away from it and haven’t been able to make sense of it since. Learn the importance of keeping up with innovation, and the challenges in doing so if we continue to look at the 21st Century through 19th Century eyes.

Until recently, music was dismissed by neuroscience as ‘auditory cheesecake’, delightful but a luxury without any use in evolutionary terms. Yet innovative research into the psychology of music has revealed it could be as rewarding a field of research as language. Find out how music could hold the answer to improving memory, happiness and more from leading music psychologist Dr Vicky Williamson.
