Music Hall

Existing scholarly literature on music hall has focused on its cultural and historical importance as a music genre. Ellen's work reconsiders music hall as popular performance by focusing on the way in which music hall was performed, how it was staged, and what made it popular. Investigating a provincial example of music hall in nineteenth century urban Liverpool and exploring how music hall emerged, thrived and then dissipated into other cultural forms.

Ellen has developed an interactive session on the huge influence of music hall on popular music for the early 20th Century for Salon North.
