Lisa Bortolotti

Philosophy of Psychology and Psychiatry

Lisa Bortolotti is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Birmingham. Her main research areas are the philosophy of psychology and psychiatry. Lisa is interested in rationality and belief, and in various limitations of cognition and affect exemplified in memory distortion, self-deception, delusion, confabulation, and reasoning biases. Recently Lisa completed a project on the costs and benefits of optimism, asking whether optimism leads to success. She runs a group blog called Imperfect Cognitions where topics at the intersection of the philosophy of mind and mental health are addressed by both scholars and people with lived experience. Her latest book is Irrationality (Polity Press, 2014).
